The Structure




June 1, 1917
Born into the family of Rev. Mychailo and Olena Dmyterko in the village of Bychkivtsi (Chortivskyi district, Ternopil region). He completed the Myshkiv School (7 grades). His studies at the Ternopil Gymnasium were interrupted because the school was closed by the Polish authorities. He completed his last year in Stanislav.

1932
Entered the Krechiv Monastery. Candidate. Novitiate.

1933
Took monastic vows.

1933-1939
Studied theology at the Basilian seminaries in Krystynopol and Lavriv.

1939
Driven from the Lavriv Monastery by the Polish Army with the other Basilian seminarians. In his search for a new place of study traveled to Przemysl (Poland), Olomuc (Czechoslovakia).

1940-1941
Studied at the Olomuc seminary. After it was closed, traveled with the monks to Prague.

1941-1942
Studied at the Karlo University, School of Theology.

May 14, 1942
Ordained as priest together with 7 Basilian classmates in Prague by Haiduroz bishop Mykola (Dudash).

1942-1943
Forced labor at the construction site of the electric station in the city of Moravska Ostrava.

1943
Returned to Ukraine, staying in monasteries in Lviv, and Pohon.

1943-1944
Prefect and teacher at the Basilian City Institute (Minor Seminary) in Buchach.

1944
Arrested temporarily a few times.

1946
Served the underground church in the villages of the Ternopil and Ivano-Frankivsk Regions.

1948-49
Studied accounting.

1950-1952
Completed the Lviv Technical School of Soviet Trade through distance-learning.

from 1949
Worked as the cashier of the forest-trade warehouse in Kolomyia, later, as the head bookkeeper.

November 30, 1968
Ordained bishop by Bishop Ivan (Sleziuk) to be the bishop-coadjutor of Ivano-Frankivsk.

December 4, 1973
Arrested.

January 1974
Sentenced according to statute 187 KK USSR for 2 years imprisonment which he served in the village of Lieninskoie, (Sverdlovsk district, Luhansk region).

1975
Returned to Kolomyia. Worked as fire-stoker, with heavy machinery, and in the production of smoked fish.

1976
Retired.

When the Church was underground, he ordained close to 65 new priests.

1988-1990
Took an active role in the actions to legalize the UGCC, traveling to Moscow as part of the delegation of the UGCC.

1989
Appointed bishop-ordinary of the Ivano-Frankivsk eparchy of the UGCC.

14-20 September 1997
UGCC Synod of bishops accepted the resignation of Bishop Sofron from his position as bishop-ordinary of the Ivano –Frankivsk eparchy.

Bishop-emeritus.
