1911-1947


The Structure




April 14, 1911
Born into the large family of a railroad worker in the village of Velykyi Bychkiv (Transcarpathia region). After completing a four-grade primary school in his village he continued his education at the Khust State Gymnasium. He graduated with honors in 1930.

1930-1934
With the blessing of Pavlo (Hebeia), bishop-ordinary of the Mukachivo eparchy of the Greek Catholic Church, he studied in Rome at the Germanicum-Hungaricum College.

Fall 1934
Transferred to the Papal Russian College (Russicum).

1935
Ordained deacon.

December 25, 1936
Ordained priest.

1937
Completed his Licentiate in Theology at the Papal Gregorian University.

1937
Returned to his homeland to complete the required one year course of military preparation at the Prague Officers’ School.

1938
Administrator of the mountain villages Bereziv and Hyzhnii Bystryi (Khust district).

1938-1939
Served in the Czech army for a few months because of general mobilization (draft) and then returned to pastoral ministry at his former parish.

September 3, 1939-1944
Professor of Philosophy and spiritual director of the Uzhhorod Seminary.

1943
Received the rank of honorary papal chaplain (monsignor).

September 24, 1944
Ordained bishop-administrator of the Mukachivo eparchy of the Greek Catholic Church.
The Soviet Army occupied Transcarpathia and it was officially included in the Ukrainian SSR on June 29, 1945. The Greek Catholic Church experienced increased pressure and attack. Bishop Romzha in various ways supported the religious and faithful, completing a series of pastoral trips around the eparchy and also some short-term trips.

On October 27, 1947, during one of these short-term trips, there was a premeditated attempt on his life by the NKVD (KGB).

November 1, 1947
Poisoned and died at the Mukachivo hospital.

2001
Beatified as martyr.
