The Theological Academy in Lviv has a complicated, tragic and at the same time glorious history. On the one hand it is a new and unique phenomenon in Ukraine and on the other hand it continues the educational and cultural traditions of the entire Kyivan Church.

An exhibition, made by the Institute of Church History on the basis of its' archive documents and LTA photo-archive, represents photographs from the period of 1929-2002. This exhibition is a unique possibility for professors, students and numerous guests of this educational institution to learn more about history of its foundation and further development.

Inauguration of UCU

“Today, when our people have fallen down, exhausted from an unfair struggle for a decent life; when the devil, the father of darkness, is sowing the weeds of debauchery and godlessness on our land blessed by St. Andrew the Apostle; we have decided to follow the lead of our illustrious forerunners and to establish a higher educational institution of Catholic studies of the Eastern rite in the city of Lviv. This will be the Greek Catholic Theological Academy, a legal entity that will lay a solid groundwork for the spiritual revival of our people. It will also serve to prepare our holy Church to fulfill its great forthcoming mission in Christ’s vineyard, both on the Ukrainian Land and among the peoples of Eastern Europe, thirsty for the truth of God.
Proceeding from these noble ideas, we approve the suggested statute of the Academy and entrust the rector and professors to protect and cherish among students deep piousness, along with pure and untainted knowledge of the Universal Catholic Church. We decree that theology, canon law and the liturgy of the Holy Eastern Church, which originated before the schism, shall be profoundly studied, and that divergences between Eastern Christians and the Catholic Church following the ill-fated schism shall be thoroughly researched. In particular, the past of the Church of the Ukrainian people, as well as the self-sacrificing struggle that our forefathers led for holy unity, sparing not even their own blood, shall be closely studied.
May the blessing of the Lord be upon you, now and ever and forever. Amen.”

Promulgated in Lviv on 22 February in the year of Our Lord 1929.

ANDREY,
Metropolitan
