Born in 1956 and baptized Yurii, he grew up in the city of Balakliia (Kharkiv region). He has been involved with Kharkiv State University for many years: from 1974 to 1979 he studied there, from 1981 he worked as a lecturer and later as an assistant professor at the universitys department of Ukrainian Literature. In 1987 he defended his doctoral thesis The Patericon of the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves in the Historical and Literary Process from the end of the 15th to the early 18th Centuries in Ukraine at the Shevchenko Institute of Literature (Kyiv). This thesis was published in 1990.
He teaches Ukrainian Christian writing from the baroque era. He played an active role in the creation of national and democratic organizations in Kharkiv and in 1991 became the head of the All-Ukrainian Community of Andrew the First-Called Apostle. In 1991 he took monastic vows at Saint Michaels Monastery of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC). The next year he was ordained to the priesthood with the blessing of Patriarch Mstyslav (Skrypnyk) (UAOC) and was then ordained bishop of the Kharkiv and Poltava regions. |
