| Born on June 24, 1914 in Dolyna, formerly Stanislav province (now the Ivano-Frankivsk region), he graduated from the gymnasium in Stryi. In 1934 he entered the Lviv Theological Academy where he studied Philosophy and Theology. From 1937 to 1939 he studied in Innsbruck (Austria). On September 21, 1938 at the Metropolitan Residence at St.Georges Cathedral, Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky ordained him a priest for the Lviv archeparchy. After Innsbruck he studied in Switzerland, where he received his doctoral degree in Theology in 1941. In 1944 Myroslav Ivan Lubachivsky received his licentiate in Biblical Sciences after having graduated from the Papal Biblical Institute in Rome. In 1945 he began studying Philosophy at Romes Gregorian University and Medicine at the Italian Kings University. In 1947 he received two licentiates, in Philosophy and Medicine. In May 1947 he emigrated to the USA. His first position was as secretary to the archbishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Philadelphia. In 1949 he was appointed pastor of Saints Peter and Paul Church in Cleveland, Ohio. On September 13, 1979 he was nominated archbishop of the Philadelphia metropolitanate. Myroslav Ivan Lubachivsky was the first hierarch in the history of the Greek Catholic Church consecrated by the Roman Pontiff (November 12, 1979). Patriarch Josyf Slipyj and Metropolitan Maksym Hermaniuk also took part. The Synod of Bishops elected him and Pope John Paul II designated him coadjutor and assistant to Patriarch Josyf Slipyj with the right to succession .In 1980 the new coadjutor left for the Vatican to work with Patriarch Josyf. After the patriarchs death on September 7, 1984, Myroslav Ivan Lubachivsky succeeded him as major archbishop of Lviv. On May 25, 1985 Pope John Paul II named him cardinal with the title of prior of St. Sophias Church in Rome. On March 30, 1991 Myroslav Ivan returned to Lviv to lead the revival of the UGCC. One of the cardinals priorities upon his return to his homeland was to renew the work of the Lviv Theological Academy. With his assistance, the LTA resumed its activities in March 1994 and Cardinal Lubachivsky was proclaimed the Chancellor of the Academy. Myroslav Ivan Lubachivsky was the author of many scholarly writings, a handbook on Liturgics, three books of sermons, and numerous scholarly publications. He also worked on translations. Major Archbishop and Cardinal Lubachivsky died on December 14, 2000. |
