Rt. Rev. Archimandrite Robert F. Taft, S.J.


Rev. Taft is a professor of Eastern Liturgy at the Pontifical Oriental Institute (POI) in Rome and a prolific scholar, with over 600 titles and books to his credit. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1949 and was ordained a Catholic priest in the Byzantine-Slavonic (Russian) rite in 1963. As the specialist in the liturgical traditions of the Christian East, he has delivered papers and participated in conferences throughout the world. He also has edited numerous journals and consulted on various church commissions.

Among his honors, his book, The Liturgy of the Hours in East and West, received the first place award of the Catholic Press Association for the best book in Theology in 1986. In 1998 he was elevated to Mitred Archimandrite by Archbishop Stephen Sulyk (UGCC) in recognition for his services to the Eastern Churches. He served as vice-rector of the POI from 1995 to 2001 and continues to teach there.
