Born on January 22,1945, in Skalsko, Bohemia, Czechoslovakia. In September 1945 his family moved to Austria. In 1963 he joined the Dominican Order. Studied in Walberberg, Bonn, Germany; Le Saulchoir, Paris (doctorate in theology); Ecole Practique de Hautes Etudes, La Sorbonne University, Paris; Institute Catholique, Paris. Ordained a priest on December 27, 1970. He was a member of International Theological Commission, Foundation "Pro Oriente", attended II Extraordinary Assembly of the World Synod of Bishops, secretary of the commission of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith to edit the new Catechism of the Catholic Church (1987-1992). Elected as titular Bishop of Sutri and appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Vienna, July 11, 1991. Consecrated by Cardinal Hans Hermann Groër, O.S.B., archbishop of Vienna on September 29, 1991. Promoted to ëo-Adjutor Bishop of Vienna with right of succession on April 13, 1995. Succeeded to Metropolitan See of Vienna September 14, 1995. February 21, 1998 the Pope appointed him to the College of Cardinals. President of Austrian Episcopal Conference (1998-. ) |
