Studied philosophy and theology in Regensburg and Rome.
1960 — priest-ordination, 1967 — doctorate in theology.

Since 1975 Head of the Institute of Theology and History of Eastern Churches / Catholic Theological Faculty / University of Vienna

Since 1979 member of the International Joint Commission for the Theological Dialogue between the Roman Catholic and the Orthodox Churches.

Lecturer at Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, Catholic and Orthodox Theological Institutes in Moscow and St.Petersburg.

Doctor honoris causa of the University of Cluj / Romania (1999).

Honorary senator of the University of Arad / Romania (2001).
