In January 2004 UCU’s Institute of Church History established an ongoing scholarly seminar, “Church Historiography in Post-Communist Ukraine: Modern Intellectual Challenges, Theological Paradigms, and Traditional Narrative.” The seminar looks at problematic questions on defining the subject and tasks of the study of church history; its place in the structure of other disciplines, in particular theological and general historical, and relations between “clerical” and “secular” approaches to interpreting the spiritual inheritance of Christianity; the interruption of the historiographical tradition in Ukraine and the necessity of overcoming the violence of the atheistic state against freedom of conscience and scholarly creativity; and regional and denominational aspects of writing history, and integrating this into the international scholarly environment. Participating in the seminar are leading scholars and young researchers from Lviv, Kyiv, and other cities of Ukraine and also from abroad.
